Robert Seabourne - Biography

Robert Seabourne

Gentleman Artist

The Artist's Statement

My subject matter tends to focus on the peaceful countryside where man and nature try to co-exist. I like to paint structures that have stood the test of time and the elements. That subject matter could be a weathered barn, a stone mill house or an ancient tree. To me, they are not relics but monuments to the strength, perseverance and hope that will survive and prosper in the face of nature. And that courage and faith has been handed down from one generation to the next.

Bio

Robert’s style and work is impressionistic realism portraying landscapes and animals. Maintaining a loose style whether en plein air or in the studio, his images are vibrant in color and convey the mood of the moment. Robert has tried all types of mediums, but has always come back to oils. He prefers a very smooth surface to work on and meticulously prepares his own masonite panels. He also creates most of his own frames.

Robert has been involved in the creative process since his Mother recognized his talent at the age of four. Having had numerous lessons to introduce him to the various mediums and styles of drawing and painting, when it came time to attend college he went to Kutztown University to earn a BFA. Robert has continued to learn and refine his craft by attending workshops and private lessons. He is also self-taught in graphic design and utilized that skill by teaching at a local technical college for 15 years. Robert had many influences that touched his style of art including N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Eric Sloane and Norman Rockwell.

Robert has shown his work mostly in the Reading area. He was involved in a non-profit art gallery for a number of years where he had a one man shop entitled ‘Legacy’. He has shown in a number of juried shows with the Berks Art Alliance, Studio B in Boyertown and the Pottstown Area Artist Guild.

Robert was born in Bethlehem, PA and grew up on a gentleman’s farm in Douglassville, Berks County. There he developed his love for the country, nature, and for history. Robert has a very extensive collection of photographic reference material based on the surrounding farms and historic landmarks of Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties. Many of which he uses in his paintings.

Robert currently resides in Shillington, PA with his lovely and supportive wife, Cynthia.
